Smithers grew up in Woodland Hills, California. She played the character Bailey Quarters on the popular television series WKRP in Cincinnati. From 1987 through 1995 she was married to actor James Brolin.
"I took matters in my own hands and decided that Bailey, while very insecure and totally unlike Jennifer because she's not together and not naturally outgoing, did have a lot of ambition and the capacity to grow. I think lots of people can relate to that and root for Bailey. That's the kind of mail I get--people say, 'I'm trying to gain more freedom, too.'"

The rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd took their name from a high school teacher named Leonard Skinner who had suspended several students for having long hair.
