Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's  brilliant detective, arrived on the mystery  scene in the late nineteenth century in "A Study  in Scarlet" (1887).
Sherlock Holmes is the most portrayed character on film, having been played by 72 actors in 204 films. The historical character
most represented in films is Napoleon Bonaparte, with 194 film portrayals. Abraham Lincoln is the U.S. President to be portrayed most on film, with 136 films featuring actors playing the role.
The "Calabash" pipe, most often associated with Sherlock Holmes, was not used by him until William Gillette (an American) portrayed Holmes on stage. Gillette needed a pipe he could keep in his mouth while he spoke his lines.
